Life-As we know it

We lived on a tree
Not too many
In a small house
Four feet by four.

Housed four
In a family of ten
Each with parents
And a brother and sister.

The tree big
The leaves broad
The house wide
For the small four.

We lived happily
Seeing our parents
Learning from them
Ways of life eagerly.

We knew no pain
No sorrow, no hurdle
Only joy, happiness
And the desire to fly.

We were young
Strong and growing
And together we sung
At night with joy.

The world was big
And called us forth
We flapped our wings
But could not, we were still young.

We called our parents
Hungry and in need
Father popped his head in
And gave us mouthful.

We were happy
The nest was cosy
Our parents warm
And the world kind.

We knew not dangers
We knew not mishaps
We knew not death
But life who were our parents.

We lived in a big world
With big dreams
To fly high
Touching the wide sky.

The tiny eyes
Saw the sky
Saw the birds
Who went by everyday.

New faces
New voices
New stories
We learnt everyday.

Of luck
Of hope
Of dreams
Of death.

We were not perturbed
Protected under the shield
The parents held
Of strength and love.

The tree grew bigger
We grew stronger
Flapping our wings
Ready to face the call.

Few days were left
We had to take off
In a journey
Far wide for big experience.

Our blood warm
Youth strong
Excitement unnerving
To step into a world so big.

The day dawned
Bright and clear
We stood near
Wishing luck.

Something above
Big and dark
As heavy dark clouds
Blocked sunlight off our face.

We felt cold
We felt scared
Strange and nervous
About this feeling we’ve never had.

The shrieks got louder
Cousins flew out
Parents leading the way
And we followed.

Sweet home
Torn to pieces
By black ravens
Scaring us away.

They followed afar
Killing a few
The rest escaping
The jaws of death.

We were lucky
Said a few
We disagreed
Having reached a safer place.

Danger over
Peace restored
We made this tree
Our new abode.

We thought again
The words heard
The stories told
By unseen friends.

Of luck
Of hope
Of dreams
Of death.

And we knew
We were not lucky
By luck
Which gave us death.

We could say lucky
By escaping death
And starting afresh
And were lucky to be alive and call that luck.

And this tree
Made our home
Peaceful and safe
For the young ones to fly and play.

  1. Like a like to keep saying this - life as we know it, is tragically unknowable!
